Chapter Six

On his fifth morning in Paladin, Kris woke to a new song playing in his soul. A different song, unlike anything he had ever composed before. Thinking back and taking a body inventory, it took him a moment to realize he no longer felt the stress tying knots in his shoulders and upper back that he had lived with for as long as he could remember.

He had been so busy helping, both Forrest with the cooking and laundry and the rest of the team with painting the hotel, he had not had time to stress about his music. For a quick moment, he realized he was so far behind in his composing he would never get caught up and finish the songs he owed his manager by the rapidly approaching deadline. But lying in Forrest’s warm, secure embrace, and listening to the man breathe, he knew it no longer mattered.

The seven men of Team Paladin had changed the way he looked at the world. There was more to life than pounding out song after song, tunes that felt wrong and all sounded just like what everyone else in Nashville was cranking out, trying to come up with the next big hit. He wanted that, but he also wanted his music to stand out from the crowd, though he hadn’t figured out how to do that while keeping them marketable to both the singers who performed them and the music buying public who were the ultimate deciding factor on whether a song was a hit or a failure.

Closing his eyes, Kris tried to go back to sleep, but the song kept playing in his head, keeping him awake. The music in his head would not be ignored. It would not stop until he either purged it onto the page or went crazy from it playing over and over and over.

Forrest barely moved as Kris worked himself free of the big man’s hold. Once out of bed, he grabbed his messenger bag and some clothes before stepping into the hall. After sliding the bedroom door shut, he used the bathroom and dressed. He had set the coffeemaker up the night before so all he had to do was hit the power button as he passed the big shiny machine.

Since Forrest didn’t want him to leave the RV until after daybreak, Kris set up his computer and keyboard on the small dining table just behind the driver’s seat. Once he confirmed everything was working, he dug a pair of earbuds out of a side pocket and plugged them in as well. No need to disturb Forrest or anyone else within hearing distance while he worked.

He never shared his music with anyone until it was as perfect as he could make it. Though the song currently taunting him was close, his biggest challenge would be to accurately translate the tune in his head to notes on the page as he figured out the countermelodies, harmonies, and which instruments played which notes.
